I have always admired cats of any breed for their independence, cleanliness and determination to go their own way.
I have 3 elderly cats and decided to adopt a kitten to raise as I had missed the fun that kittens brought to my life. After watching a television show about different breeds of cats I fell in love with the Maine Coon breed and decided that was the kitten I wanted. I found a breeder near where I live. I was so excited to visit the kittens and find a new addition to my pet family.
The kittens at only months old were much larger than other breeds and had beautiful long furry coats and tails. I was hooked!!
I brought my new four- month old kitten home to introduce her to the rest of the family. My two large dogs and 3 older cats were very curious and of course, the kitten hid under the bed where all kittens seem to hide when they are afraid.
After many hours of trying to persuade her to come out from her hiding place she slowly appeared.
Misty, that was now her name, seemed quite unperturbed with all the attention she was getting and soon settled down to be a very lively young lady, creating chaos all over the house, many ornaments being knocked over and plant pots being investigated, especially those that had dirt for her to play in!
I received a call from the breeder asking if I could take another kitten as he was closing down his business, so, of course, I could not say no. Off I went to pick up this kitten that needed a home,to find when I got there that there were two kittens, who were quite sick and I could see they needed medical care. I debated with myself as to why would I take on this extra responsibility but, being very soft – hearted, I could not turn my back on them.
So for the next two weeks I kept them away from the other cats and nursed them day and night. With the help of my local veterinarian they pulled through and I could rest easy that all my care and attention had given them a chance at a happy life.
They are now well settled in to their new life and are causing complete chaos in the house being destructive and playful as all kittens are but the Maine Coon breed is a determined breed, with an ability to be contented to be by themselves or to dash about the house, all three of them at once, to re-arrange the rugs and the furniture! They can grow up to four feet in length, so I am hoping that they will have settled down by then or my home may be in turmoil!
I started out to have one kitten and now I have three, would I do it again?
You bet I would!!!
